The second IDM event of the 2017 season took place last weekend (06.-09. July 2017) in Zolder – home race of the Belgian based team Van Zon-Remeha-BMW. Markus Reiterberger calls Circuit Zolder to one of his favorite tracks. It is therefore no wonder that the results of the race weekend correspond to his own expectations. Dominance over all qualifying sessions, double victory and extension of the championship lead for the 23-year-old Bavarian on his BMW S 1000 RR. Awesome performance by team Van Zon-Remeha-BMW in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM).
The good relationship between the former Formula 1 circuit and Markus Reiterberger began in 2013. On his first visit to the Belgian circuit, as rookie rider to Werner Daemens’s IDM team, he not only set a new lap record , but also celebrated its first IDM victory. Rookie Reiterberger also won his first IDM championship this year. In 2015, however, he lowered the lap record in Zolder again and it still exists today.
The team around Markus has already started with a good basis setup and used the first training sessions for a simulation of the racing distance. Reiti set the best time in the first practice with 1: 33.445 min (-0.493) and put another 1: 31.961 min (-1.246) in the second session.
Markus compeleted the first qualifying session on race tires on P1 with a 1: 32.237 min (-0.755). For a really fast lap, the temperatures were too hott hat day, so that the squad saved the qualifying tire for the second qualifying session. Markus finished the first part of the second qualifying with a racing tire and despite a strong traffic on the track, he reached a lap time of 1.31.839 min. After changing to the Pirelli Qualifyer, he only made an improvement by almost five hundredths to 1.31.785 min. He he could not complete an optimal round with the Qualifyer, but his pole position was never in danger. His excellent pace on racing tires made him look confident for the two Superbike races on Sunday. His toughest competitor, teammate Danny de Boer, started right next to him from 2nd grid position .
In dry and stable conditions, with all fans of his IDM team Van Zon-Remeha-BMW in his back, Markus started optimally in the first race. Already after the first lap he had a comfortable gap to pursuer Danny de Boer and secured in lap 2 the fastest laptime overall with 1: 31.759 min. The race, which had been set for 16 laps, had to be canceled due to a race accident in lap 12, and Markus Reiterberger was therefore declarded victorious by a 12.890 second gap ahead of Danny de Boer. The Van Zon-Remeha-BMW team impressively demonstrated that this year’s victory in Zolder can only go to Markus Reiterberger. 25 points for Reiterberger’s championship account.
From Markus Reiterberger’s perspective, the second IDM Superbike run was similar to the first. After a perfect start from pole position, Markus secured an unprecedented start-finish victory. He again set his personal best laptime in the second lap with 1: 31.676 min. Unfortunately, the second Superbike race was also canceled before the regular end because a motorcycle was lying on the track after a racing accident. With a respectable distance of 10,506 seconds Reiti won again before his team colleague Danny de Boer.
A perfect weekend for Markus Reiterberger and the team around Werner Daemen. With a maximum score of 50 points, he continues to expand his championship leadership. It is already his third victory in the fourth race of this year’s IDM championship.
The next few weeks will be laborious for the current IDM Leader. On July 24th, the official Dorna test will take place for the Wildcard entry in the German Superbike World Championship round at Lausitzring (18.-20. August 2017). And on July 28th the third IDM event of the year starts on the Schleizer Dreieck (Thuringia).
